Chapter 11

Sean

“You expecting a bunch of drag queens to come through that door any minute?”

The odd question had my head snapping around to stare at Jake. “What?”

What kind of stupid-ass question was that? But considering he was technically my boss when I was working, I tried not to call him names.

Jake laughed. “You’ve been checking that door every five minutes for the last hour. You’re clearly expecting someone.”

I sighed, then gave up trying to keep my life private. “Miles is stopping by after work.”

When he’d left the house earlier, we’d decided he’d come by the bar after work and then we’d head home together. I hadn’t wanted him driving those back roads in the dark until he’d gotten used to them, and he’d been willing to accommodate my worries. Besides, he’d said that having a chance to relax would be nice.

I was hoping that he’d actually start talking to people, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. He had people-watching down to a science and didn’t seem interested in giving that up.

“Ahh, Mister Rogers is coming back specifically for you this time?” Jake wasn’t bothering to hide his grin.

“Yes.” I decided to just take the plunge and get it over with before Miles arrived. “He’s going to spend the week with me. He needs a break, so he’s going to come stay in my guest room.”

Jake snorted. “Guest room, huh?”

“Yep.” I wouldn’t deny that I was curious to see what would happen over the week, but I’d never push. Miles was forthright enough that he’d tell me exactly what he was ready for—and right now, all he was ready for was peace and a place to figure shit out.

“Okay then.” He just shook his head. “You going to need time off this week?”

The question sounded painful as it came out of his mouth. I laughed. “That hurt, didn’t it?”

“Hell, yeah.”

“Well, no worries, I’m not changing my schedule. He needs to relax, not have me hovering all over him this week.” As enticing as the idea sounded, I knew I’d drive him nuts.

“Probably a good idea.” Jake chuckled then leaned back against the bar and surveyed the room, his eyes landing on the new waiter. “Is he working out?”

“That’s a stupid question.” Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the best way to talk to a boss.

Jake didn’t mind, though. Barking out a laugh, he cocked his head and watched the cute new server work the room. “I almost didn’t offer him the job. Something about him just…”

Just drove him nuts—that had been why I’d made sure the sexy cutie had gotten the job.

Something about the way they’d watched each other said it was more than just sexual chemistry. “The guys like him, and he works the room really well without tempting them too much.”

He was a natural flirt, but he didn’t seem to be the type that I’d have to constantly pull out of the storage room because he’d been giving a customer a BJ in the back of the bar. “And he’s getting shit done.
